Hand Soap Swap

If you’re following Climate Kindness on social, you might’ve seen this stat that was shared:

If plastic production isn’t curbed, plastic pollution will outweigh fish pound for pound by 2050

Isn’t that insane?! That’s why we need to take action to cut back on plastic usage. And that’s where this product recommendation comes into play.

When I became aware of all of the single-use plastic I was using, I decided to start making swaps for more eco-friendly alternatives. I learned that even though I was recycling the plastic when I was done (when applicable), reducing plastic is more valuable for the planet as it saves energy and materials. I realized that hand soap bottles were a product I could easily change, so I began doing research on greener options and decided to try hand soap from Blueland.

Blueland is a line of cleaning products that come in reusable glass bottles. Their products include surface cleaner, glass and mirror cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and hand soap. The cleaner comes in tablet form, and all you have to do is fill up the bottles with warm or hot water, pop in the tablet, and wait for it to dissolve. Refills are only $2 (so that’s just $2 for a bottle of soap!) and come in minimal (compostable and/or recyclable) packaging. The packing used for the refills is the main reason I choose Blueland - I noticed that some other companies that say they offer eco-friendly products send refills in plastic packaging, and although it might be a little better than buying new bottles each time, it’s still plastic that isn’t used with Blueland.

I’ve only tried the hand soap so far, but liked it so much I ordered a second bottle for my other sink. Not only do I know I’m cutting back on plastic with each use, but I like the look of the bottle as well. The scents are nice and mild. The soap is a foaming hand soap, so I personally use a little bit more than traditional hand soaps to get a lather, but one bottle still lasts about as long as bottles that I was using previously. I haven’t had a need yet for the other cleaners, but plan to try them out when I do.
